MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has launched its own probe into the shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City that left three students dead, NBI Director Melvin Matibag said Wednesday.
Matibag told reporters at the NBI headquarters that the bureau assigned its Tacloban office to conduct a parallel investigation into the incident.
“We assigned our Tacloban office to investigate so we will also have a source for this,” Matibag said.
The shooting occurred Monday when two male students, aged 15 and 14, allegedly opened fire inside the school campus.
The attack killed three students and injured several others, authorities said.
The two minors are under the custody of the Philippine National Police and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police said Wednesday that authorities have filed complaints for three counts of murder, as well as multiple counts of frustrated murder and serious physical injuries, against the 15-year-old suspect.
Under Republic Act No. 9344, or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act, children aged 15 and below are exempt from criminal liability and may instead undergo intervention programs provided under the law.
