LOS ANGELES — Veteran guard Marcus Smart will join the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-year, $11 million contract after securing a buyout from the Washington Wizards, sources confirmed Sunday.

Smart, a 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year and three-time All-Defensive First Team selection, will finalize his deal once he clears waivers. The contract will include a player option for the 2026–27 season.

The Wizards have not officially announced the buyout. However, the Lakers have already waived guards Shake Milton and Jordan Goodwin to create roster and salary-cap space for Smart.

Smart spent nine seasons with the Boston Celtics before stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards over the past two years. The 31-year-old averaged 9.0 points and 3.2 assists last season despite limited playing time due to a finger injury.

Lakers star Luka Dončić reportedly reached out to Smart personally, helping to recruit him to Los Angeles. The Lakers hope Smart’s strong perimeter defense and two-way play will enhance their supporting cast as they aim to advance deeper in the playoffs.

All signs point to Smart joining the Lakers shortly after clearing waivers, pending official confirmation from the team.
