My First Visit to the Windy City

Last weekend, I had the chance to visit downtown Chicago for the first time. As a lawyer who usually spends most days buried in case files and court documents, this trip was a refreshing break from the usual grind. What made it unforgettable was not just the city’s stunning landmarks but also an unexpected moment during my visit—the “The Kings” protest on June 15, 2025.

Arrival and First Impressions

Chicago greeted me with its famous skyline, sharp and proud against the summer sky. The city’s energy was palpable from the moment I stepped out of the train station. I stayed near Millennium Park, a perfect spot to start exploring.

Exploring Chicago’s Famous Landmarks

My first stop was Millennium Park itself. It’s home to the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture, better known as “The Bean.” Seeing people from all over the world snapping photos and admiring the shiny, reflective surface made me appreciate how art can bring people together. Near the park, I walked along the Chicago Riverwalk, where boats cruised and locals enjoyed the sunshine.

Next, I thought about visiting the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) and standing on the Skydeck, 1,353 feet above the city. But no, I didn’t go up. My fear of heights was stronger than my wish to take pictures from the top. Maybe I’ll try it next time. I’m also planning to visit Navy Pier on my next trip. The idea of riding the attractions, enjoying the food, and watching the lake sounds very inviting. I’m sure the fresh breeze off Lake Michigan will be a nice break from the busy city streets.

The Magnificent Mile

Strolling down Chicago’s Magnificent Mile was an unforgettable experience that buzzed with energy at every turn. The dazzling mix of sleek skyscrapers and historic buildings set the perfect scene as I explored a treasure trove of trendy shops and luxury boutiques. From grabbing a quick bite at a cozy café to savoring gourmet flavors in stylish restaurants, every moment was a feast for the senses. Street art and iconic landmarks popped up around every corner, adding unexpected charm to the vibrant city vibe. The Magnificent Mile wasn’t just a place to visit – it felt like the heartbeat of Chicago, and I loved every second of it.

An Unexpected Protest: “The Kings” on June 15

On June 15, while enjoying downtown, I came across a large gathering called “The Kings” protest. This event was organized to raise awareness about social justice issues affecting communities in Chicago and beyond. Thousands of people marched peacefully through the streets, holding signs and chanting for change.

As a lawyer, I was especially interested in how this protest reflected citizens exercising their rights peacefully. The Chicago Police worked to keep everyone safe, and despite the size of the crowd, things remained calm and respectful.

Traffic Alert

During my visit to downtown Chicago, I quickly realized that traffic congestion is a major issue. The streets were often crowded with cars, turning what should have been a short trip into a much longer one. Heavy traffic, ongoing construction, and narrow roads made getting around quite frustrating. I was advised to use public transportation instead of driving since a 30-minute drive could easily become a two-hour ordeal. Taking that advice, I decided to ride the subway, which made a big difference.

Despite the protest adding an unexpected layer to my trip, my weekend in Chicago was truly positive. The city’s mix of history, architecture, friendly people, and vibrant culture made it easy to fall in love with this place. Whether it was admiring art at Millennium Park or enjoying the Magnificent Mile, Chicago showed me that it’s a city full of life and heart.

I’m already looking forward to my next visit — maybe next time with a little more time to explore its neighborhoods and try even more local food!

I remember in one of my past conversations with a client, he mentioned that despite the traffic challenges, he believes downtown Chicago is far better than downtown Houston or Dallas. He talked about Chicago’s vibrant atmosphere, the accessibility of public transportation, and the variety of cultural and dining options available. According to him, the energy and walkability of Chicago’s downtown area make it a more enjoyable and convenient place to visit or work compared to the other cities.

If you ever get a chance to visit Chicago, don’t hesitate. It’s a place where every street corner has a story waiting to be discovered.
