MANILA, Philippines — Filipino flyweight Miel Fajardo is preparing for his first world title opportunity after the International Boxing Federation ordered champion Masamichi Yabuki of Japan to make a mandatory defense of his 112-pound belt.
Fajardo expects the title fight to take place as early as October or November, with negotiations underway.
“It doesn’t matter where the fight takes place. What’s important is the opportunity to fight for a title,” Fajardo said Friday during an open workout at Elorde Sports Center.
American boxing dealmaker Sean Gibbons represents Fajardo through Hong Kong-based former boxer Lennon Tsoi, who said the Filipino has a strong chance against Yabuki.
“Miel’s got a terrific chance because he is disciplined and hits really hard,” Tsoi said.
Fajardo earned his mandatory challenger status in April after knocking out Argentina’s Tobias Reyes in 65 seconds in an IBF title eliminator.
The 26-year-old fighter from San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, enters the title bout with a 14-3-2 record, including 12 knockouts.
Yabuki, 34, holds a 20-2 record with 18 knockouts.
Fajardo said his family motivates him as he pursues his first world championship.
“A victory would somehow make our lives better, and this is the main reason why I have the burning desire to win the world title,” he said.
He also hopes winning the IBF flyweight crown will allow him to bring recognition to the Philippines.
“Winning would also allow me to give my country honor on top of the ring,” Fajardo said.
