A devastating Russian airstrike on Ukraine’s capital killed 21, including children, and damaged EU and UK buildings, prompting international condemnation and diplomatic actions.
The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia deployed 629 air attack weapons during the strike, including 598 drones and 31 missiles. Yuriy Ihnat, head of communications for the Ukrainian air force, described the assault as one of the largest combined attacks on the country.
In response to the attack, both the European Union and the United Kingdom have summoned Russian diplomats to their respective capitals. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the incident as “another grim reminder” of the conflict’s stakes, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of sabotaging peace efforts by targeting civilians.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the assault as a deliberate attack on civilians and reiterated calls for worldwide condemnation of Russia’s actions. He emphasized that the use of missiles and drones is a response to international calls for a ceasefire.
The attack has prompted a significant response from the international community, with various countries summoning Russian envoys in protest. Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities continue to dispatch responders to multiple locations affected by the strikes.
As the investigation into the attack continues, a day of mourning has been declared in Kyiv, with flags flown at half-mast and entertainment events canceled.
