Fox’s popular crime drama, “The Cleaning Lady,” is set to make a return for its fourth season on March 25. The series has captivated viewers with its gripping storytelling and exploration of the immigrant experience, focusing on the life of Thony De La Rosa, played by Élodie Yung. Thony, a Cambodian Filipino doctor, finds herself entangled in a life of crime as she strives to save her son, making for an intense and compelling narrative.

Martha Millan plays a central role in the ensemble cast as Fiona De La Rosa, Thony’s sister-in-law. A Filipino Australian, Millan grew up in Sydney and brings a significant representation of Filipino culture to the show. Her character, Fiona, deals with the challenges of undocumented status, adding layers of complexity and sacrifice to the storyline.

In a recent interview with Inquirer.net USA, Millan elaborated on how her Filipino background has influenced her portrayal of Fiona. She reflected on her upbringing in Australia and the experiences of her immigrant parents as pivotal in shaping her understanding of her character’s struggles and grace under pressure.

Millan emphasizes the fiery spirit and passion inherent in Filipino women, drawing inspiration from her own mother. She seeks to represent this vitality and strength through her character, aiming to capture the essence of Filipino resilience and determination.

Fiona De La Rosa’s character stands out as a devoted sister-in-law and single mother, elements of her role that Millan deeply admires and embraces. Her portrayal of Fiona’s unwavering strength and resolve has resonated with audiences, making the character a beloved figure among fans.

Across the series, Millan has been a strong advocate for the representation of Southeast Asian stories on mainstream television. She believes in the importance of showcasing diverse narratives, particularly those that reflect the immigrant experience and the challenges faced by communities of color.

“The Cleaning Lady” has been praised for its exploration of themes such as family, sacrifice, and survival. The show continues to draw in viewers with its complex characters and intense plotlines. As the fourth season approaches, fans eagerly anticipate the continuation of Thony and Fiona’s journey, with Millan’s performance promising to deliver an authentic depiction of the multifaceted immigrant experience.
