MANILA, Philippines — Actress Marian Rivera said she and husband Dingdong Dantes have chosen not to give their children money yet, instead teaching them the value of earning through a household chore-based points system.

Rivera said their children, Zia and Sixto, earn points for completing chores at home. Once they accumulate enough points, they can use them to get or buy things they want.

The actress said she and Dantes have not yet decided when or how they will formally introduce financial concepts to their children. She said she is considering age 13 as an appropriate time to discuss money with Zia, who turns 11 this year.

“I grew up with my grandmother. And everything I earned after college was valuable, I cherish them. And that is what I want to pass on to my children, that I take care of what I earn,” Rivera said at a recent event in Makati.

Rivera attended the 41st anniversary celebration of a major Philippine non-bank financial institution at the Makati Shangri-La, where she spoke to journalists and online content creators about her approach to family finances.

She said technology has also allowed her to remain involved in managing the family’s finances despite her busy schedule.

When asked what financial advice she would give young Filipinos, Rivera answered, “discipline.”

She said young people often spend money on things they believe they deserve. Rivera encouraged them to become more deliberate with their finances and suggested finding a mentor who can teach them about saving, investing and managing money.

Rivera and Dantes are currently filming “Remember,” a follow-up to their 2023 film “Rewind.”

Rivera said they are not making the new movie to surpass the success of “Rewind,” but because they found another story that could offer lessons to audiences.

“We are not making this to top ‘Rewind.’ We were just looking for another story to tell, something where they can learn lessons from,” she said.
