MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Friday called on the public to consider existing government programs for elderly Filipinos amid ongoing criticism and public debate surrounding the proposed Parents Welfare bill, which seeks to mandate adult children to financially support their aging parents.

In a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration continues to implement initiatives focused on the welfare of senior citizens, primarily through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Among these is the Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens Program, which provides regular financial assistance to qualified elderly individuals who lack sufficient means or family support.

“The government has established programs to ensure that the needs of our elderly population are addressed, especially those who are indigent or without direct family support,” Castro said.

The Parents Welfare bill, currently under consideration, proposes penalties for children who fail to fulfill their legal obligation to support their elderly parents.

In response, Malacañang emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding available services and assistance for seniors. Officials also called for stronger collaboration between families and government agencies to improve senior welfare.

The Palace assured the public that the administration remains committed to expanding and strengthening support systems for the elderly through comprehensive policy measures and continuous program evaluation.
