ST. LOUIS, Missouri — Singer Lionel Richie was hospitalized in an intensive care unit after performing at The Muny in Forest Park on Saturday, with reports saying doctors evaluated him for possible mild dehydration.
Richie, 77, checked himself into a local hospital following his Aug. 29 concert to undergo medical tests, The Hollywood Reporter and TMZ reported.
Witnesses cited by TMZ said Richie appeared to struggle near the end of the performance. During his final song, the 1983 hit “All Night Long,” he asked his team to bring him a chair and finished the song while seated.
TMZ reported that doctors evaluated Richie for possible mild dehydration and that he hoped to leave the hospital Tuesday.
The hospitalization comes months after Richie experienced another health issue during a concert in St. Paul, Minnesota. In June, he told the audience that he felt “dizzy” and “strange” before ending the performance early. Paramedics later met him backstage and took him to a hospital.
Richie has since returned to the road for his “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.
His next scheduled concert is Sept. 26 in San Francisco. It remains unclear whether his latest hospitalization will affect his upcoming performances.
Richie rose to fame as the lead singer and saxophonist of the Commodores before launching a successful solo career. His hits include “Endless Love,” “Say You, Say Me,” “Stuck on You” and “The Only One.”
The four-time Grammy winner entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. His 1983 album “Can’t Slow Down” won the Grammy for Album of the Year and sold more than 10 million copies in the United States.
Richie also co-wrote “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson in 1985. The charity single won the Grammy for Song of the Year.
He first visited the Philippines with the Commodores in 1975 and returned to Manila as a solo performer in 2014 for his “All the Hits — All Night Long” World Tour.
