MIAMI — Lionel Messi scored one goal and assisted another as Inter Miami CF defeated the Portland Timbers, 2-0, on Sunday at Nu Stadium to secure the club’s first victory at its new home venue.

Messi scored his 13th goal of the season in the 31st minute after receiving a pass from Telasco Segovia, who redirected a feed from Luis Suárez. Messi beat Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis from 12 yards out to give Inter Miami a 1-0 lead.

Inter Miami extended its advantage in the 42nd minute when German Berterame converted a pass from Messi inside the left post. Messi created the play after dribbling past two defenders in the box.

Portland threatened first in the 11th minute when goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair deflected a shot by Cole Bassett from outside the penalty area.

The victory ended Inter Miami’s winless start at Nu Stadium, where the club had recorded three draws and one loss before Sunday’s match.

Supporters’ groups known as “La Familia” remained silent for most of the game before beginning chants in the 85th minute. Reports said the groups were protesting because players had not acknowledged them at the new stadium.

The match marked Portland coach Phil Neville’s first game against Inter Miami since the club dismissed him in 2023 before Messi joined the team.

Neville told reporters before the match that he understood the club would likely change coaches if Messi signed with Inter Miami.

Sunday’s game also marked Inter Miami’s first match since the club announced that forward Tadeo Allende underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. The club did not provide a timetable for his return.
