In a recent report from the Major League Soccer Players Association, the earnings of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami have been a significant talking point. Messi’s compensation for 2024 surpasses the total payroll of 22 other teams in the league. According to the salary guide, Messi is set to receive $20.4 million in annual guaranteed compensation. His base salary stands at $12 million.

The MLS Players Association updates its salary details regularly, providing transparency within the league’s financial framework. Messi joined Inter Miami in the middle of 2023, bringing significant attention and excitement to the league. His earnings reflect his standing as one of the world’s top football players. This high compensation aligns with his ability to attract fans and boost the league’s profile.

Olivier Giroud, who joined Los Angeles FC in July, is another high-profile player in the league. He earns an annualized total compensation of $3,675,000. This figure places him among the higher earners, though still significantly below Messi’s compensation. Giroud’s move to Los Angeles has added another layer of excitement to the league, continuing MLS’s trend of attracting international talents.

MLS, over the years, has seen a steady increase in international stars joining its ranks. This development aligns with the league’s strategy to enhance its global presence and competitive edge. High-profile signings like Messi and Giroud indicate that MLS is a growing destination for renowned players.

Inter Miami’s decision to sign Messi was a calculated move. The club aimed to elevate its brand and competitive performance. Messi’s presence has indeed increased attendance and interest in the club’s matches. Inter Miami’s strategy appears focused not only on on-field performance but also on off-field growth and brand visibility.

The disparity between Messi’s earnings and those of other teams underlines the financial diversity within MLS. While some teams operate with substantial budgets, others manage with more modest payrolls. This financial structure is partly due to the league’s varied team markets and ownership strategies.

MLS has been growing its appeal by inviting international stars. These players often bring a fanbase from their home countries, contributing to MLS’s expansion in global markets. The league’s efforts to position itself as a competitive destination for top talents seem to be paying off.
