Oscar-winning actor-turned-director Kevin Costner paid tribute to the ensemble of women in his latest Western epic, “Horizon: An American Saga.” For Costner, the storylines of this multi-narrative, four-part saga are not only intertwined with the characters portrayed by his actresses but are also rendered essential by their contributions.

Costner, who serves as the creator, producer, co-writer, director, and star of “Horizon,” views this project as a labor of love. The film chronicles the expansion and settlement of the American West during the Civil War years through the eyes of settlers, Native Americans, and immigrants drawn to the fictional Old West town of Horizon in search of a better life.

During a virtual press conference attended by The STAR, it was emphasized that women are often underrepresented in the Western genre. However, “Horizon” breaks this trend with strong female characters portrayed by Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jena Malone, and Ella Hunt.

Speaking about their roles and experiences working with Costner, the actresses shared various insights into the filming process and their characters. The first installment of “Horizon” is now showing in Philippine cinemas.

Sienna Miller, who plays the widow Frances Kittredge fighting for her and her daughter’s survival, expressed her admiration for her character. “Every character in this has something going on,” said Miller, known for her roles in “American Sniper” and “G.I. Joe.” “Mine is incredibly brave and courageous, but forward-thinking and compromising her own needs for her daughter. She’s a survivor.”

Miller emphasized the importance of recognizing women’s roles in shaping American history. “To tell a story about the inception of America as we know it today, which doesn’t include women, is really disingenuous,” she said. “Kevin crafted these incredible characters and follows their contribution to the settlement of America and their personal internal struggles.”

Abbey Lee, who plays Marigold, a prostitute teaming up with Costner’s character Hayes Ellison, praised Costner’s dual role as director and actor. “As a director, he’s really passionate and has a lot of energy,” she said. “As an actor, he’s so relaxed and gentle. It felt like you’re communicating with a real person, not just acting.”

Ella Hunt, portraying British settler Juliette Chesney, found the experience deeply rewarding. “I had a glorious time making these films. It was a thrill for me to play this kind of role at this stage of my career,” she said, noting Costner’s belief in her casting.

Isabelle Fuhrman, who plays Diamond Kittredge, a wagon train worker, appreciated the opportunity to work with her fellow actresses and Costner. “Kevin put so much belief and trust in us. It felt like making movies in the most magical way,” she shared.

Jena Malone, known for her role in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” described the film’s terrain and landscapes as crucial to her portrayal of a settler. “Shooting in such a beautiful environment was a gift as an actor. It changes how you make decisions,” she said, highlighting the immersive nature of the Utah filming locations.

“Horizon: An American Saga” not only brings a fresh perspective to the Western genre but also showcases the vital roles women played in the history of the American West. With Costner at the helm, the film promises a rich and multifaceted narrative brought to life by a talented ensemble cast.
