AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke and his political organization, Powered by People, accusing them of deceptive fundraising and illegal support of the Texas Democrats’ recent legislative walkout.

Paxton’s lawsuit alleges that Powered by People misled donors about the purpose and use of funds raised, claiming the money was intended to back the Democrats’ walkout protest against a voting restrictions bill. The suit contends these actions violated state laws governing political fundraising.

A judge issued a temporary injunction blocking O’Rourke’s group from continuing its fundraising activities under the current circumstances. Paxton has also requested sanctions, including jail time for O’Rourke, alleging violations of the court order.

In response, O’Rourke filed a countersuit against Paxton, arguing that the lawsuit seeks to obstruct legitimate voter registration and political engagement efforts. O’Rourke’s organization maintains its activities are lawful and aimed at increasing voter participation in Texas.

The legal dispute arises amid heightened tensions over Texas voting legislation, with Democrats staging a walkout to oppose the bill citing concerns about voter suppression. The walkout involved leaving the state to prevent the bill’s passage.

O’Rourke, known for his previous campaigns for U.S. Senate and president, continues to be active in voting rights advocacy.

Paxton, serving as Texas Attorney General since 2015, has been a consistent supporter of measures to tighten voting laws and enforce election security.
