DURANGO, Colorado– A kangaroo named Irwin was found in a neighbor’s backyard in Durango this week, marking his second escape in six months and renewing public attention on the exotic pet.
Durango police responded to the scene after neighbors reported the animal roaming freely. Officers identified the kangaroo as Irwin, who previously made headlines after leading police on a chase through downtown Durango while wearing a diaper.
In that earlier incident, Irwin escaped from his owner’s care and was eventually returned without injury.
According to local authorities, Irwin’s owner remains in compliance with city regulations governing exotic pets. These rules require owners to secure animals and prevent them from posing risks to the public. The owner has not provided comment regarding the repeated escapes.
The department has referred to Irwin as “Durango’s Most Unexpected Repeat Offender.”
Officials have not announced any plans to revise exotic animal laws, but they have issued reminders for all pet owners to take precautions to prevent escapes.
The Durango Police Department said it will continue monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of both residents and animals.
