MANILA, Philippines — Kai Sotto marked his return to Gilas Pilipinas with 18 points, 14 rebounds and a crucial overtime block as the Philippines escaped Jordan, 82-81, in the Fiba World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers on Friday at Mall of Asia Arena.
Sotto made several key plays in overtime, including a block on Abdullah Olajuwon’s attempt that helped preserve the Philippines’ narrow victory.
The win moved Gilas to a 3-4 record in Group E for 10 points.
Sotto returned to the national team after nearly two years away. He last played for Gilas in 2024 and admitted that the long-awaited comeback carried plenty of pressure.
“Before the game, I was thinking a lot,” Sotto said in Filipino. “The excitement and thought of not having played for the national team all mixed together. I know I’m bringing a lot of pressure.”
The Koshigaya Alphas import said he felt relieved to finally play for the national team again and translate his desire to return into a strong performance.
Despite the pressure, Sotto quickly made an impact as Gilas rallied from an 18-point deficit against Jordan.
“I’m so happy that I’m one of the guys who contributed,” he said. “We had a slow start but we chased them down possession by possession. I’m so proud of my team tonight.”
The Ateneo product also received a strong reception from the home crowd during his return.
Sotto’s performance gave Gilas a much-needed boost as the team continued its campaign in the second round of the Asian qualifiers.
