Bexar County officials announced on Thursday, Dec. 26, that Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Michele Garcia died the day after Christmas in San Antonio, Texas, from cervical cancer.

Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai described her as a public servant who left a profound impact on the community.

Judge Sakai released a public statement confirming Garcia died on December 26, 2024, and identified cervical cancer as the cause of death. He stated that she received treatment for her illness before her death. He added that she continued to focus on her work in Precinct 4 while managing her health.

Garcia’s family informed the court and county leadership about her death shortly after it occurred, according to county officials. The Bexar County Courthouse closed her chambers in Precinct 4 temporarily following the announcement. Staff in her office notified litigants and attorneys with scheduled hearings about changes to the court calendar.

Judge Sakai said Garcia devoted her career to serving residents in her precinct. He stated that she worked to make the justice system more accessible to people who appeared in her courtroom.

He said Garcia handled cases involving evictions, small claims, traffic offenses, and other justice court matters with attention to the people involved. He added that she balanced the law with respect for the parties in each case.

County officials said Garcia’s work touched residents across neighborhoods in Precinct 4. They reported that her court handled a high volume of civil and criminal cases each year. They noted that she collaborated with county departments, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations.

Judge Sakai said Garcia’s death leaves a vacancy in the Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace office. He explained that state law and county procedures will guide the selection or appointment of her successor. Bexar County officials said the Commissioners Court will review options for filling the position. They stated that the county will announce interim arrangements for court operations once the plan is complete.

Judge Sakai said county leaders will coordinate with Garcia’s family regarding memorial services and public recognition. He stated that the county plans to honor her years of public service and will share information about any official ceremony once details become available.
