Jordanian athlete missing after Genuine Cup event at Rice University

HOUSTON — Rice University police are searching for a 24-year-old Jordanian athlete who was reported missing after traveling to Houston to compete in the Genuine Cup soccer tournament.

The Rice University Police Department said Rabe’e Ata Juma’a Alqaq was last seen late Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday after telling his coach and teammates he was going for a walk. According to university officials, he did not return to his room and missed breakfast the following morning.

Surveillance video captured Alqaq walking around the Rice University campus. He was last seen wearing a light blue T-shirt and black pants. University officials said he does not speak English.

Alqaq traveled to Houston to participate in the Genuine Cup, a soccer tournament for athletes with disabilities being held at Rice University through Aug. 1.

The Rice University Police Department has issued a “Be On the Lookout” alert for Alqaq. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the Rice University Police Department at 713-348-6000.
