Texas music icon Joe Ely dead at 78

Joe Ely, a Texas singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his work in country, rock, and Americana music, died in Texas at age 78, his family announced. 

Ely gained national recognition in the 1970s and 1980s for his live performances and songwriting, performing as a solo artist and with bands across Texas, the United States, and internationally. His music drew on West Texas life and regional influences, blending country, rock, and folk traditions.

Over his career, Ely released numerous albums on major and independent labels and collaborated with other artists in Texas and Americana music circles. He was recognized for his contributions to songwriting, recording, and regional music preservation.
