ROME — Italy’s health ministry issued a red heatwave alert on Tuesday for 15 cities, including Rome and Milan, warning of dangerously high temperatures and expanding the alert to 16 cities on Wednesday as extreme heat conditions persist across the country.

The ministry said the red alert, its highest heat warning level, applies during periods of severe heat that pose health risks, and advised residents to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, eat light meals, and use cooling measures such as sprinkling water on the body.
