GAZA CITY — Israel has launched a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip, named Operation Gideon Chariots, aimed at pressuring Hamas to release hostages and dismantling the group’s operational capabilities.
The offensive, announced by the Israeli government, follows a series of sustained aerial and ground attacks across the region and has significantly escalated the conflict.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated the operation intends to place “substantial pressure” on Hamas.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed the objective to dismantle the militant group, which has controlled Gaza since 2007.
The operation comes in response to the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas and allied groups on southern Israel, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and 251 abducted.
In the past 24 hours alone, more than 150 people have been killed in Israeli strikes, bringing the total death toll in Gaza to over 3,000 since hostilities resumed in March.
The Israeli military has focused operations on Hamas strongholds, leading to intense ground combat in several areas.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Strikes have damaged infrastructure, and residents face severe shortages of water, food, and medical supplies.
Despite mounting international concern, Israel maintains its operations are necessary for national security and the return of hostages.
Government officials have announced plans to tighten internal security measures amid continued threats from Hamas and other regional actors.
