NEW DELHI, India –Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was honored at a state funeral in New Delhi on Saturday following his death at the age of 92 on Thursday. Singh served as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.
The Indian government declared seven days of mourning to mark his passing. Singh is known for his role in economic liberalization and policy reforms that contributed to India’s economic growth.
Before becoming Prime Minister, Singh served as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. During this time, he implemented economic reforms that opened India’s economy to foreign investment and modernized key sectors.
Singh earned a doctorate in economics from Oxford University and held positions including Chief Economic Advisor and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, Singh’s government introduced social welfare programs targeting education, healthcare, and rural development.
Manmohan Singh’s funeral was attended by government officials, business leaders, and citizens. Investigations into his policies and contributions continue to be part of discussions on India’s economic and political history.
