SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A 39-year-old cyclist sustained critical injuries after a collision with a Nissan Altima on Houston’s north side.

The Houston Police Department reported that the accident happened when the cyclist moved into the roadway without yielding the right of way.

Eyewitnesses stated that the cyclist appeared to be crossing the street when the collision occurred. Police arrived promptly, secured the scene, and arranged for emergency medical assistance.

The driver of the Nissan Altima stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police confirmed that the driver showed no signs of impairment. No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

This incident adds to the growing number of bicycle-related accidents in Houston’s north side, raising concerns about road safety for cyclists.

City officials have been working on initiatives like adding bike lanes and improving signage to make roads safer for cyclists and drivers alike.

Advocacy group Bike Houston called for better safety measures, stressing the importance of public education for cyclists and motorists on sharing the road. They reiterated the need for expanded infrastructure to protect cyclists citywide.

The injured cyclist, whose identity remains undisclosed, was transported to a hospital and remains in critical condition. Authorities are investigating the crash, reviewing road conditions, traffic signals, and witness accounts to determine the cause.

The Houston Police Department has urged anyone with additional information to come forward. City officials plan to discuss road safety improvements in upcoming meetings to prevent similar incidents.
