U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested more than 1,500 people in Houston in a major enforcement operation targeting undocumented offenders and criminal elements, including gang members, sexual predators, and convicted felons.
Officials said this operation represents ICE’s largest in the city this year. Arrests occurred across Houston and in surrounding areas.
Residents in some neighborhoods, particularly the East End, reported seeing immigration agents, drawing a mix of reactions from the community.
Bail bondsman Mario Garza noted that many were surprised by the operation’s scale, mentioning conversations with individuals who did not expect such an extensive enforcement action.
Community advocates expressed concerns about the broader impact of the crackdown. Sergio Lira from Greater Houston LULAC said removing violent criminals is important, but the size of the operation could negatively affect immigrant families and neighborhoods.
Local officials acknowledged challenges in balancing immigration enforcement with justice for local crimes. Wesley Wittig from the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office said deportations can complicate local legal processes, making it harder to ensure accountability for crimes committed in the community.
Garza added that individuals sent directly to detention centers often face deportation before standing trial for local offenses. A local district attorney confirmed some deportations occurred before cases were resolved, though most involved misdemeanor charges.
