A human rights lawyers’ group in the Philippines called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday to deny former President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for interim release.
The group, known as the Center for International Law (CenterLaw), expressed concerns that granting Duterte’s release could directly threaten the safety of victims and undermine the integrity of his pending prosecution.
The call came after Duterte submitted a request to the ICC, seeking temporary freedom while his case is under consideration.
Duterte faces prosecution for alleged crimes against humanity during his presidency, with the ICC conducting an investigation into his administration’s war on drugs campaign.
CenterLaw emphasized the potential risks to witnesses and victims if Duterte were allowed interim release. The group urged the ICC to prioritize the safety and security of individuals involved in the case.
