An International Criminal Court (ICC)-accredited lawyer on Thursday rejected claims by former President Rodrigo Duterte’s defense team that he is mentally unfit to stand trial.

The defense alleged that Duterte is experiencing a “deteriorating cognitive condition” and sought to use the claim as grounds for his interim release. The ICC lawyer countered that there is no evidence to support the assertion and emphasized that the court continues to focus on the charges filed against Duterte.

Duterte faces proceedings at the ICC for alleged human rights violations linked to his administration’s anti-drug campaign. The defense team’s claim of mental unfitness forms a central part of their legal strategy to justify temporary release while the case is ongoing.

The ICC lawyer’s statement challenged the defense approach and underscored the need for substantiated proof before the court considers such arguments. The claims of cognitive decline have not been verified in court.

The ICC proceedings against Duterte remain active, with international observers closely monitoring developments. The court reiterated its mandate to ensure accountability and uphold fair trial standards in cases involving alleged international crimes.
