HOUSTON — The Houston Texans hosted a regional girls’ flag football tournament at their training facility as part of efforts to expand the sport in Texas and secure official sanctioning from the University Interscholastic League (UIL).

The tournament took place inside the Texans’ practice facility, where high school athletes competed in games typically reserved for NFL team activities.

Participants said the event represented continued growth for girls’ flag football in the state.

The Houston Texans Foundation said it continues to advocate for UIL approval of the sport. Executive director Amanda Grosdidier said the organization has urged UIL officials to sanction girls’ flag football, noting that 23 states already recognize it as a sanctioned sport.

The Texans also partnered with the Dallas Cowboys to support the development of girls’ flag football in Texas and to help establish a state championship.

Organizers scheduled the first Texas girls’ flag football state championship for June 13 and 14, with four teams from the Texans’ program expected to compete.
