Houston Public Works has started removing the physical barriers from the bike lanes along Heights Boulevard, citing safety concerns.

These barriers were initially installed to separate cyclists from vehicle traffic, with the goal of enhancing rider safety.

The barriers were implemented based on findings from the Federal Highway Administration, which suggest that physical protectors can reduce bicycle-vehicle collisions by up to 53%.

Despite these benefits, the city has decided to move forward with the removal.

Houston Public Works has not specified the exact safety concerns prompting the removal, leaving many questions about the nature of the issues.

The department has not provided detailed explanations regarding any incidents that may have led to the decision.

Cyclists, in particular, worry that removing the barriers will increase their exposure to vehicle traffic.

Beyond the safety of cyclists, some community members are concerned that the removal of the protectors may affect overall road safety and traffic flow.

The barriers had not only served as physical protection for cyclists but also as visual cues for drivers, helping to increase awareness of cyclists on the road.

Cyclists are advised to exercise extra caution while using the Heights Boulevard bike lane, as the removal of the barriers changes the dynamics of the area.
