HOUSTON, Texas – A urologist at Houston Methodist Urology Associates has been temporarily suspended following allegations of cocaine use while performing surgeries.

According to the Texas Medical Board, Dr. Nathan Robert Starke, aged 43, tested positive for cocaine on October 15, 2024, shortly after attending a professional rehabilitation program.

Starke’s suspension is a result of proceedings initiated by the Texas Medical Board. The suspension, dated December 20, 2024, was imposed to prevent further clinical practice until a thorough investigation is completed.

The board stated that the suspension remains in effect until they take further action on the matter.

The hospital suspended Dr. Starke from his duties on September 6, 2024, a decision made amid concerns about potential risks posed to patient safety.

The hospital’s spokesperson emphasized patient safety as a top priority and indicated that the institution is cooperating fully with the medical board’s investigations.

The events leading up to the suspension allegedly involve multiple surgeries performed by Starke between August and September 2024, during which he is accused of being impaired.

Detailed accounts from the Texas Medical Board reveal involvement in these procedures while under the influence, though specifics of these surgeries have not been publicly disclosed.

In response to the allegations, Starke attended a professional rehabilitation program, completing it on October 6, 2024.

Despite this effort, his return to work on October 15, 2024, was marked by the positive cocaine test that led to the current suspension.

The Texas Medical Board has emphasized the temporary nature of the suspension.

The board is conducting a comprehensive review of Starke’s medical practices during the period in question.

An official statement from the board highlighted the severity of allegations concerning drug use and the necessity to ensure public trust and safety within the medical community.

Legal representatives for Starke have indicated that they are aware of the allegations and are preparing an official response.

They are working closely with relevant authorities to address the situation, though specific legal strategies or defenses have not been made public.

Meanwhile, patients affected by the actions of Starke have been encouraged to seek follow-up care with other specialists within Houston Methodist Hospital.

The hospital has reiterated its commitment to assisting patients through this period of uncertainty, ensuring continuity of care and addressing any concerns arising from the situation.

As the investigation continues, the Texas Medical Board remains tight-lipped about the specific timeline for the completion of its inquiry.

Houston Methodist Hospital has assured that comprehensive measures are in place to prevent similar occurrences.

Ongoing review processes and adherence to strict protocols are emphasized as key strategies in maintaining a safe and trustworthy healthcare environment.

The community is encouraged to stay informed through official channels as further updates from the Texas Medical Board and Houston Methodist Hospital are anticipated.
