Houston Mayor John Whitmire has announced a new traffic safety initiative targeting road rage and reckless driving on Interstate 45 and Interstate 69/U.S. 59.

The effort, led by the Houston Police Department with support from the Texas Department of Public Safety, began enforcement this week.

During the first two days of the initiative, around 300 citations were issued. Officers focused on speeding and other dangerous behaviors along the busy freeway corridors. Early results show a drop in traffic incidents during the enforcement period.

Mayor Whitmire emphasized the city’s zero-tolerance policy for road rage and irresponsible driving, citing public concerns and a commitment to safer roads.

The city plans to monitor the initiative’s impact and may expand efforts to other high-traffic areas. Public awareness campaigns will also accompany enforcement to educate drivers and encourage safe driving habits.
