Border Patrol seizes $2.6M in meth hidden in carrot shipment

In Pharr, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers on Monday seized more than $2.6 million worth of suspected methamphetamine hidden inside a shipment of carrots at the Pharr International Bridge, officials said.

Authorities discovered the drugs during a secondary inspection of a commercial tractor-trailer arriving from Reynosa, Mexico, using a K9 team and inspection equipment.

Officers uncovered 1,055 packages of methamphetamine weighing a total of 297.62 pounds (135 kilograms) concealed within the vegetable shipment. Officials estimated the street value of the drugs at $2,660,580.

Agents seized both the narcotics and the tractor-trailer. Homeland Security Investigations has opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
