Houston city officials have announced plans to expand the George R. Brown Convention Center, which will include a new pedestrian plaza and the largest ballroom in Texas.

This expansion is aimed at increasing the city’s capacity to host large-scale conventions.

The convention center, located in downtown Houston, currently has 1.9 million square feet of space. The expansion will further enhance its ability to accommodate major events and attract more conventions.

The project will include a pedestrian plaza designed to improve accessibility and connectivity in the area.

The new ballroom will allow the city to host larger events, supporting Houston’s efforts to remain competitive in the convention market.

City officials have highlighted the potential economic benefits of the expansion, including increased tourism and business opportunities.

However, some residents from the East End neighborhood have raised concerns about the closure of Polk Street, which is a key route adjacent to the convention center. They worry the closure will disrupt traffic and affect local businesses.

To address these concerns, city officials have been engaging with community leaders and residents to explore solutions to mitigate potential impacts.

The expansion is being led by the development corporation Hines, based in Houston. Hines will manage the project to ensure its successful completion.
