HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Food Bank announced expanded food distribution efforts across the region to assist families affected in the ongoing federal government shutdown and uncertainty over the restoration of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
On Monday morning, hundreds of families gathered at the West Houston Assistance Ministries for a large-scale food distribution event organized through the Houston Food Bank.
Registration for the event reached full capacity, and the distribution began at 8 a.m. The organization plans to hold food drives almost daily throughout November to meet the growing demand for assistance.
Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones and District Attorney Sean Teare joined volunteers during the event, helping load vehicles and providing information about local resources.
Over the weekend, the organization held one of its largest food distributions at NRG Park, where more than 5,000 families received assistance.
For residents unable to attend Monday’s event, another food distribution will take place Tuesday at Bethel’s Helping Hands in Southwest Houston, beginning at 8 a.m.
