Already holding significant stakes in European soccer clubs Everton FC and AS Roma, Friedkin’s ambitions have shifted to acquiring a major U.S. franchise. Earlier attempts to purchase the NBA’s Boston Celtics fell through when the team was sold in March for over $6 billion to a group led by Bill Chisholm.
With the NBA opportunity closed, Friedkin and The Friedkin Group have emerged as leading candidates to potentially bring an NHL franchise to Houston, though no official plans have been confirmed since initial discussions emerged in March. In preparation for future opportunities, The Friedkin Group recently unveiled Pursuit Sports, a new venture aimed at managing sports-related investments, under the continued leadership of CEO Dave Beeston, whose experience includes high-profile acquisitions with Fenway Sports Group and Clearlake Capital Group.
Friedkin’s initiatives could significantly impact Houston’s sports landscape, currently dominated by long-established names. A successful bid to secure an NHL or WNBA team could elevate Friedkin’s status in the city, revitalizing interest in sports and entertainment.
