The Houston City Council approved over $12.4 million to purchase up to 31 new garbage and recycling trucks to address service delays faced by the Solid Waste Management Department.
Mayor John Whitmire noted that while staffing levels are sufficient, the department requires more vehicles to operate effectively. Eleven trucks are expected to be operational within two days of the purchase order.
A policy update also expands driver certifications, allowing operators to drive both side-loading and rear-loading trucks.
The city is currently reviewing its recycling contract, which includes a single drop-off location that contributes to service delays. Mayor Whitmire expressed concerns about the contract’s inefficiencies and indicated the city may pursue legal action to improve recycling services.
