LOS ANGELES — Sony Pictures is developing a biographical film about country-pop singer Shania Twain, with filmmaker Leah McKendrick attached to write and direct the project, according to a report published by Deadline on June 3.
The film, titled Shania, will chronicle Twain’s journey from her upbringing in Canada to becoming one of the best-selling female artists in country music. Specific plot details have not yet been disclosed.
Twain will serve as a producer on the project alongside Amie Karp.
McKendrick is known for writing and directing the independent comedy-drama Scrambled.
The biopic marks another music-focused project for Sony Pictures, which previously released Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody and is producing The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event directed by Sam Mendes.
Twain rose to international prominence through hits including Man! I Feel Like a Woman!, You’re Still the One, That Don’t Impress Me Much, From This Moment On and Any Man of Mine.
Her 1997 album Come On Over became one of the best-selling albums of all time and remains the best-selling studio album by a female solo artist.
In 2022, Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl premiered on Netflix, documenting the singer’s career, personal challenges and return to the spotlight following health issues.
Twain recently announced plans to release her seventh studio album, Little Miss Twain, and will serve as host of the 2026 Academy of Country Music Awards.
