LOS ANGELES — More than 1,000 actors, directors and industry professionals signed an open letter opposing a proposed merger between Warner Bros. and Paramount, citing concerns about reduced competition and job losses in Hollywood.

Signatories include Jane Fonda, Joaquin Phoenix, Bryan Cranston, J.J. Abrams and Denis Villeneuve.

The letter said the proposed deal would further concentrate the media industry and reduce opportunities for creators, jobs across the production sector, and choices for audiences.

Paramount Skydance, led by David Ellison, announced plans in February for a $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. The studio owns major franchises including Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.

Industry figures said the merger could lead to cost-cutting measures affecting both creative professionals and workers in supporting roles, including production crews and service providers.

The letter also warned that the deal would reduce the number of major U.S. film studios to four and said previous industry consolidation has already led to fewer film productions.

Paramount Skydance said it plans to release at least 30 feature films annually with full theatrical distribution and said the merger would expand opportunities for creators and audiences.

The proposed deal has drawn attention in the broader political landscape, with reports indicating support from U.S. President Donald Trump.
