Vice President Kamala Harris met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, emphasizing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and the urgent need to finalize a cease-fire deal.

After a “frank and constructive” discussion, Harris expressed her deep concerns over the devastation in Gaza over the past nine months. “We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering, and I will not be silent,” she stated.

Harris reiterated the U.S. commitment to Israel’s right to self-defense while highlighting hopeful progress in cease-fire negotiations. She urged Netanyahu to finalize the deal, aiming to end the conflict, bring hostages home, and provide essential relief to Palestinians. Harris also underscored her commitment to a two-state solution.

The meeting’s significance is heightened by the recent electoral developments, with Harris running for president following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Harris missed Netanyahu’s Congressional address due to a prior engagement but has been actively engaged in addressing the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Earlier, President Biden hosted Netanyahu in the Oval Office, discussing efforts to secure a cease-fire and release hostages. Biden stressed the urgency of finalizing the deal and emphasized the importance of safeguarding civilian lives and ensuring aid flow into Gaza. The discussions also touched on the U.S.’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies.

Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Biden for his longstanding support of Israel, while Biden humorously recalled their long history together.

Family members of hostages held by Hamas met with both leaders, expressing hope that Biden’s decision to focus on hostage negotiations would expedite their release. The administration remains optimistic about closing a cease-fire deal soon, with National Security Council spokesman John Kirby affirming Netanyahu’s commitment to the process.

As Harris continues to address the conflict, her stance is closely monitored for potential shifts in U.S. policy toward Israel. However, senior officials maintain that there will be no divergence between her approach and Biden’s during their respective engagements with Netanyahu.

Netanyahu, in his address to Congress, lauded Biden for his efforts and leadership in supporting Israel amid ongoing conflicts. The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet former President Donald Trump in Florida next.
