MANILA — The Department of Education announced on Friday that 738 schools across the Philippines will delay their scheduled July 29 opening due to the impact of habagat rains intensified by Typhoon Carina. Of the 12,800 schools affected, 246 reported flooding and 425 are currently housing evacuees, according to DepEd.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted severe damage concentrated in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and Central regions. Specific postponements include Malabon moving its start date to July 31 and Valenzuela to August 5, with Marikina also rescheduling to August 5, as confirmed separately by Mayor Marcelino Teodoro.

“The situation is evolving,” Angara stated, noting ongoing assessments by regional officials and collaborations with local leaders and school principals to evaluate readiness for the July 29 opening.
