LOS ANGELES — Comic book writer Gerry Conway, who co-created characters and storylines across Marvel and DC Comics, including the Punisher, died Sunday in Thousand Oaks, California, from pancreatic cancer. He was 73, according to his wife, Laura Conway.
Marvel Comics confirmed Conway’s death in a statement on Monday and described him as a prolific writer whose work spanned major characters in the Marvel universe, including Spider-Man, the Avengers, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel.
Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski said Conway’s work had a lasting impact on superhero storytelling and noted his contributions across multiple flagship titles.
Conway began writing comic book stories as a teenager and joined “The Amazing Spider-Man” at age 19. His early work included major developments in the Spider-Man storyline, including the death of Gwen Stacy, a plot point widely cited as a turning point in the series.
He also co-created the Punisher, a vigilante character known for a skull emblem that later became widely recognized in pop culture and was at times used in public controversy involving law enforcement imagery.
DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee said Conway also contributed to major DC characters and titles, including Batman, Superman, the Justice League, and co-created characters such as Firestorm, Jason Todd, and Power Girl.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said Conway’s writing combined superhero narratives with human-driven storytelling and described his work as influential to the genre.
Conway was born Sept. 10, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York. He wrote for additional Marvel titles including “Fantastic Four,” “Thor,” and “The Incredible Hulk.”
His wife said Conway continued engaging with fans late in his life, including attending a comic book signing in February despite illness, where he signed books and interacted with readers.
Conway is survived by his wife and two daughters from previous marriages.
