MANILA, Philippines — Gerald Anderson expressed sadness over the death of young basketball player Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, saying the rising athlete had a bright future after they shared the court before the tragedy.

“Before nangyari yung aksidente, very promising kid siya. Ang bright ng future sana niya,” Anderson said in an interview with The STAR. “Sayang, sayang talaga yung nangyari.”

On June 8, Ateneo de Manila University confirmed that Baterbonia and teammate Divine Adili died during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. Their deaths prompted a Senate inquiry into the incident.

Anderson later visited Baterbonia’s wake in Davao City to personally extend his condolences to the family.

“Noong dumalaw ako, kahit paano, parang nakapagbigay tayo ng konting kasiyahan, para lang ma-distract sila from the loss for a while,” he said, adding that bringing comfort to grieving families is one way artists can help.

Reflecting on the tragedy as an athlete himself, Anderson encouraged fellow players to value every opportunity.

“Make every moment count,” he said. “As an athlete, you never know. Hindi naman kailangang ganung aksidente. Puwede kang i-injure. So, be grateful and cherish every moment.”

Meanwhile, Anderson will serve as playing coach of Team Star Magic Shooting Stars in the Star Magic All-Star Games 2026 on Aug. 23 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Filipino squad will face actors from GMMTV, including twin actors AJ Jutamas and JJ Jutamas.

Anderson said the team has begun studying its opponents and expects to start formal practices next week after completing filming commitments. He added that while the visiting Thai stars will receive a warm Filipino welcome, Team Star Magic intends to compete at its best as it represents Star Magic, ABS-CBN and the Philippines.
