LAS VEGAS — Fred VanVleet, guard for the Houston Rockets, was elected president of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) during the union’s annual board of representatives meeting held in Las Vegas.

VanVleet, who went undrafted but rose to prominence with the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 NBA championship team, assumed the leadership role following the announcement on Saturday.

Since signing with the Rockets in 2023, he has averaged 14.1 points and 5.7 assists per game.

He succeeds CJ McCollum as NBPA president and will now guide the union as it continues to advocate for players’ rights, working conditions, and benefits.

The NBPA plays a key role in collective bargaining with the NBA and represents players in financial, legal, and social matters.

VanVleet’s election marks a new chapter for the players’ union. Known for his leadership both on and off the court, he aims to foster unity and progress within the association.

He will collaborate with the NBPA executive committee to shape the union’s strategic direction amid ongoing league negotiations.

The NBPA praised VanVleet’s determination and experience, noting that his journey from undrafted player to union president exemplifies resilience and leadership.
