FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth’s iconic Stockyards cattle drive will return this Friday, Nov. 28, after a brief pause prompted by an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1).
The twice-daily cattle drive had been suspended since Nov. 20 following reports of EHV-1 at the World Championship Barrel Racing (WPRA) Finals in Waco from Nov. 5–9, which brought horses from across Texas. The outbreak prompted warnings from Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and led several organizations to cancel or modify horse-related events.
Organizers said the decision to resume operations came after consultation with their equine veterinary team, noting that safety protocols and precautions are in place to protect both horses and participants.
The reopening of the Stockyards cattle drive marks a return to normalcy for Fort Worth’s western tradition and its equestrian community.
