HUNT COUNTY, Texas — Former NBA player J.R. Smith was arrested early Tuesday in Hunt County on a charge of assault causing bodily injury and family violence, according to county records.
Smith, 41, remained at the Hunt County Detention Center as of Tuesday, with records showing no bond had been set.
Authorities have not released details about the alleged incident, including where it occurred, Smith’s relationship with the alleged victim or what injuries the person reportedly suffered. Officials also have not identified the agency that made the arrest or said when Smith will appear in court.
Hunt County officials did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.
Smith played 16 NBA seasons with five teams and won two championships. He won his first title with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and his second with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
Smith last played in the NBA during the 2020 Finals. He later enrolled at North Carolina A&T, where he played golf for the university team and earned a degree in liberal studies in 2026.
Smith also faced legal issues earlier in his life. In 2007, authorities charged him with reckless driving following a crash that killed his friend Andre Bell. Smith served 24 days in prison.
In 2018, authorities issued Smith a desk ticket for misdemeanor criminal mischief after he threw a fan’s cellphone into a construction site. Smith later agreed to pay the fan $600 in restitution.
