HOUSTON, Texas– Flags were lowered to half-staff across Texas to honor Carole Keeton, a notable public servant who passed away recently.
Governor Greg Abbott issued the order for the flags to be flown at half-staff to pay tribute to Keeton’s contributions to the state.
Keeton, who was also known as Carole Keeton Strayhorn, had a distinguished career in Texas politics.
She served as the mayor of Austin from 1977 to 1983, marking her as the first woman to hold that position. Her career also included roles as a Texas railroad commissioner and the state comptroller.
Abbott emphasized the importance of recognizing Keeton’s dedication and service to Texas. He invited others across the state to join in marking her passing by lowering their flags.
The flag-lowering order underscores the state’s respect and acknowledgment of Keeton’s legacy.
