MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced that former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) undersecretary Roberto Bernardo has been granted the status of protected witness under the Department of Justice’s Witness Protection Program.

The DOJ made the decision to include Bernardo in the program to ensure his safety and secure his cooperation in an ongoing investigation. Authorities have not disclosed specific details about the case in which Bernardo is involved.

Remulla confirmed the development during a press briefing on Tuesday, stating that Bernardo’s testimony is considered essential to the investigation and prosecution. Investigators are working with him to gather evidence related to the case.

The status of protected witness grants Bernardo legal safeguards and security support while the inquiry continues. The DOJ has emphasized that the move follows proper legal procedures and reflects the importance of Bernardo’s role in the case.

Bernardo previously served as a DPWH undersecretary and held key responsibilities within the department. His inclusion in the protection program highlights the significance of the case under review.

The DOJ is expected to release more information as the investigation develops. Media outlets continue to monitor the situation closely amid sustained public interest.
