Enrile: Sara Duterte’s actions suggest avoidance of impeachment trial

MANILA, Philippines — Former Senate President and current Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile said Tuesday that Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent legal actions may indicate a reluctance to face an impeachment trial.

In an exclusive interview with INQUIRER.net, Enrile commented on the ongoing delays in the impeachment process. Duterte’s camp has filed multiple petitions challenging the complaint lodged against her, contributing to the postponement of formal proceedings.

“The impression I get is that she may not want to go through the trial,” Enrile said during the interview, drawing from his experience in two previous impeachment cases.

The Senate, which functions as an impeachment court, is currently awaiting certifications from the House of Representatives on key constitutional matters. The certifications will determine whether the upper chamber can proceed with the trial.

The impeachment proceedings stem from allegations made against the Vice President. While the details of the complaint remain under review, both legislative chambers are examining the constitutional basis for moving forward.
