MANILA, Philippines — The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) has called for flexible approaches to managing heat stress during the upcoming summer months.

ECOP emphasized that businesses and schools should have the ability to adapt their strategies based on specific needs rather than relying on blanket policies.

ECOP President Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis Jr. stated that while general recommendations for managing high summer temperatures are straightforward, advisories should be approached cautiously to prevent overreaction.

The organization suggests that allowing institutions to customize their responses to heat stress would lead to more effective management.

Ortiz-Luis highlighted the importance of local decision-making, noting that employers and educational institutions are better positioned to tailor strategies to their unique operational demands and environmental conditions. He stressed that rigid policies might not be suitable for all sectors or regions.

In the education sector, schools face particular challenges due to the overlap of peak heat periods with the summer break.

ECOP urged schools to consider adjusting academic calendars or modifying schedules to accommodate extreme weather conditions, ensuring the health and safety of students and staff.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued guidelines to help businesses manage heat-related risks.

These guidelines include recommendations on hydration, rest breaks, and ventilation in workplaces, with an emphasis on ensuring worker safety.
