MANILA, Philippines — Senator JV Ejercito filed the “Emman Atienza Bill,” officially titled the Anti-Online Hate and Harassment Act, on Nov. 2, seeking to address issues of cyberbullying, fake news, and online defamation.
The measure proposes amendments to existing laws, including the Cybercrime Prevention Act and the Anti-Bullying Act, to strengthen protections for vulnerable internet users, particularly the youth.
Under the bill, penalties would apply to offenses such as cyberlibel, online hate speech, and harassment. It also requires digital platforms to remove harmful content within a specified period once reported.
The bill honors the late Emman Atienza, a victim of online bullying whose case prompted Senator Ejercito to pursue legislation that promotes safer online spaces.
