The Austin Independent School District (AISD) has unveiled a draft plan to close 13 schools as part of a consolidation effort aimed at addressing financial shortfalls and declining student enrollment.

The announcement has ignited protests across East Austin, where residents argue the process lacked transparency and moved too quickly.

Parents and community members staged rallies, including one outside Becker Elementary School — a campus listed for potential closure.

AISD leaders defended the proposal, calling it a difficult but necessary step toward long-term financial stability.

District officials said the consolidation plan is intended to ensure resources are used efficiently while balancing fiscal constraints and educational obligations.
