Eala exits doubles play early

MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala and Zeynep Sonmez exited the doubles competition after a 6-1, 7-5 loss to Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday at Caja Magica Park in Spain.

Siniakova and Townsend won the first set 6-1. Eala and Sonmez led 4-3 in the second set before their opponents secured the match in straight sets.

Eala, ranked No. 101 in doubles, and Sonmez, ranked No. 498, reached the second round after defeating Fanny Stollar and Chan Hao-ching 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.

Siniakova and Townsend entered the tournament as the second-seeded pair. Siniakova has won multiple Women’s Tennis Association titles, including Grand Slam and Olympic doubles titles. Townsend has also won multiple WTA and Grand Slam doubles titles.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz said Friday he will not compete in this year’s tournament as he recovers from a wrist injury.
